YR #090 :: I Heard You Smile - MeekinsMeekins unleashes 6 tracks of her alternative disco- core mayhem just when you thought this year would end style-less. Mellow and smooth, deep and haunting whilst pleasantly insane at the same time. Opening up a toybox filled with defected children's toys bend to ill will, Meekins handles her vibes and grooves like a kid on the playground. A unique sound to a unique EP, solid funkness. www.yomirecords.com/yrtwo/90-ep.htmwww.yomirecords.comThis EP will be stuck on my playlist for a long long time ;D

Ok, i might aswell put one here then As i listen to the tracks, i will try and spit out reviews of the tracks individually first off, Morning Robot: From simple two step beat, to something enormously atmospheric. Nicely creeping and sawing into your head like needles, this track just doesn't seem to have any faults mistakes at all. A nice simple yet effective track. Also, the little vocals in there go majorly well with the melodie ok enough sucking up, off to the next track Chimy, that is: First that comes to mind when hearing this song, is very atmospheric games, like Myst and Riven and so on and so further. Peacefull and soft toned organic feeling is what the tune gives me, full and yet light. M-E-E-K-I-N-S to the max! Zarubin: This must be the track that i like the most of the whole EP, so far (ofcourse, i'm writing this while i listen to the tracks for the first time (!) ). It sounds so whole, so pure, so smooth, funky.... shit man i think i'm going to put this one in repeat and listen untill my brain turns into a grey-blue-ish fluid and seaps out of my ears. I just have nothing more to say about this song, this is the major peak in actually all the tracks i have ever heared of Meekins. Alot of little aspects, many many tracks still have to learn to work to, but in the other hand, that is just Meekins fantasy and look on the realm of music. Hungry Bird is up next, and no, this track deffinatly does not make me loose my appetite. It's short, it's simple, and that sample is something i kinda recognise from something, but i dunno what. Great switching between minor and major (happy sounds and sad sounds). Kinda short though, would wanted to hear some birds die or something like that, but still, i enjoyed this short piece as much as the rest. Frilly socks: It does make your toes curl, this atmospheric soundscape. It's creepy and dark, echoing voices all around your head. I can't say much about this one either, it is just so whole and Meekins written all over it! and last but not least Hesinki: I remembered finding this one on the yomi server one evening, wich i think no one even didn't know that it was there. I always wanted to hear this one on an EP by Meekins, and finally, today the day has come that it did! Another meekins-only track, acid sounds, simple two step beats, and all funky like a gameboy hooked onto a guitar amp. I did not have to review every specific little aspect of every track individually, since they're just whole... thats all i'm gonna say. Nothing repetitive, nothing boring, nothing irritating, just surprising, shocking and most of all, creeping. And now you, log off from this forum and fuckin download this EP! NOW! or i'll have to mutate my grandma and send her in your direction -EOF

But expect a review soonish... er... before the end of the year I hope...

review time....
morning robot... nice opening track to the album. In a very minimilistic style this song starts off with rouhg sounding instruments that form a mechanical melody... I enjoy how the voice simply adds to the whole vibe. A very well constructed track that seems to create an unusual atmosphere... almost eerie yet colourful at the same time.
Chimney this track is incredibly thick sounding. as if layers and layers of a synth have been folded over for onlymore layers to be added. It is slow moving and once again with the same eerie, almost lonesome atmos. I felt it could have been slightly longer... as the ending comes to quickly..
Zarubin This is where I feel the album starts moving into action. A slighter faster paced track compared to the previous two. It has so many elements that for me bring about a very lonely type of atmosphere. It spews intereting instruments and melody at every turn. I enjoy how many of the instruments act as percussion at the same time. The voice that accompanies this track is perfect.
hungry bird humourous track with a 50's type yankee going off about a bird and a cheesy bird sample to accompany that. This whole album summed into one seems to be like super mario brothers on acid. I would decribe it as incredibly colourful, with many emotions coming through at a time.
frillly socks a dark track compared to the previous ones. Whispering voices and whimpering voices. Very thick atmosphere... almost dustlike. The track is very ambient and horribly eerie. I invision one of them cute manga girls lost and in a place where she shouldnt be. Slow and ominous
helsinki the track is the perfect dance track. Funky to hell and back. Anyone heard plaid? This is similiar... It has that dark sound to it but at the same time something upbeat about it. I imagine this in some dark obscure underground club.
Overall I enjoyed this album thouroughly. It has so many facets and elements contained within it. The emotive quality is great and I think it is the perfect end off to a great year of music on yomi records.
Nice one Meekins.

BotB perhaps we should only start the zipping of albums in the new year with new releases...
What do you the rest of you think? What if we just zip everything and not offer individual downlaods? We all have broadband these days?
I prefer individual downloads with an extra download all.

Individual tracks AND zips Everything can be hosted on scene.org, and yeah.. I agree it's a nice way to start the new year.. Then slowely add the previous releases too, instead of all at once. Oi Meekins, Morning Robot is still stuck in my head !
